How Often Should I Brush My Teeth?
Human beings are forgetful, we all know we aren’t perfect and that being forgetful can happen to the best of us. July 2nd is actually declared as “I forgot” day! If you are one that finds yourself forgetting to brush your teeth, you may be asking yourself, “How often should I brush my teeth?”.
Your Dentist’s Recommendation
The American dental association recommends brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing and rinsing with alcohol-free mouthwash once a day, and chewing sugar free gum between meals in order to reduce the build up of bacteria that can lead to cavities and gum disease.
Along with brushing your teeth and practicing good oral health, it is recommended that you should let a professional “brush your teeth” at least twice a year. Which means being seen in a dental office at least twice a year for x-rays, cleanings and for preventative care. If pain or any dental concerns come up make sure to contact your dental health professional before then. A healthy mouth is created from creating lifelong habits in good oral care, but, what if you forget to brush your teeth?
I Forgot To Brush My Teeth
It’s safe to say that every human being forgets to brush their teeth every now and then. If you have forgotten to brush your teeth don’t fret too much, just make sure to brush them as soon as you can. It’s when forgetting to brush your teeth becomes a habit that we run into problems. If it does become a habit your teeth and gums will suffer. Here are a few tips to help you remember and keep your oral care a priority:
Task it: When you wake up, use the bathroom, brush your teeth, shower and so on. When it becomes part of your normal daily routine, it will be easier to remember.
Set a timer: If you need a little extra help use your phone, computer, friend or spouse to remind you when it is time to brush your teeth. Morning and evening make the most sense, but if your schedule requires differently, do what will help you get those two brushings into your schedule.
Remind yourself: There is nothing better then the good old fashioned saying, “Out of sight, out of mind”. Set your toothbrush out where you can see it everyday, this will keep it on the top of your mind and will help you to integrate it into your everyday habits.
So, How Often Should I Brush My Teeth?
The short answer is at least twice a day. And when you forget, do it when you remember. Always talk to your dentist about other strategies to put in place in order to help stay on top of brushing your teeth.
